Jingo Hawks is out of luck when Mrs. Daggatt from the orphan house hires him out as a chimney sweep to the awful General Dirty-Face Scurlock. But it's gypsy luck that puts Jingo into the right chimney and then into the care of the mysterious Mr. Peacock, who claims to know Jingo's scoundrel father. Together they set out on a treasure hunt for buried gold. But they are not alone. Those nasty gold diggers Mrs. Daggatt and General Scurlock are hot on their trail.

A mysterious man buys Jingo from the cruel mistress of the orphanage and takes him from Boston to Mexico in a race for treasure. The time is the mid-1800's, and the cast is almost fantastical: ruffians, gypsies, hard-drinking horse racers and, above all, the remarkable person who becomes known to Jingo Django as Mr. Peacock-Hancock-Jones. Dufris is a joy to listen to with his command of Fleischman's rollicking language and his own amazing capacity for varied voicings. Intelligent and artful, the words roll out true to emotional pitch and brimful of humor. There's no laughter in the person who doesn't get at least a chuckle with this one! S.B.S.
